Theia Pictures is a picture framing studio in Lenah Valley, Tasmania.

In ancient Greek mythology, THEIA, daughter of Gaia, was the Titan goddess of sight (thea) and the shining ether of the bright, blue sky (aithre). She was regarded as the deity from whom all light proceeded.

Theia Pictures is operated by wilderness adventurer, photographer and picture framer, Andy Szöllősi. The focus is on creating, preserving and presenting artistic visions of Tasmania’s wilderness.

It was through a series of fortunate events that Andy was exposed to the tricks of the picture framing trade at Ernest Studios in Melbourne in 2018. Many thanks to Craig Byrne and to Cody McCracken for the introductions. Upon returning to Tasmania, Andy was able to acquire the tools and knowledge needed to start up as a sole trader in the picture framing trade by receiving tuition and the tools from retired picture framer Phil Leworthy. Again, big thanks to Lou Balcombe for the introductions. From master to student, the skills were passed down, allowing Andy to create and present his first photographic solo exhibition, ‘A Journey to the Western Wilds’ held at the Longhouse in Hobart, 2019. Many thanks to Ruth Langford for helping to curate that exhibition.

After acquiring the tools, Andy sought the help of a friend, Vincent Aaltink to help transfrom his garage to a picture framing studio. Around the same time, Andy acquired his first medium format film camera, a Hasselblad 500C/M. With the help of this old camera, Theia Pictures was born.

Since then, the studio has moved twice, but seems to have settled in its third reincarnation, on Brushy Creek Rd, Lenah Valley. This is near the home of the Art Society of Tasmania, the Lady Franklin Gallery where Andy’s work features in some of the monthly exhibitions.
